Though no one knows what city or town this luxury bed linen came from, the duvet probably originated in rural areas of Europe. Although the word is French, many think it originated with the Norse. "Dunn", which, in Norse, means "down", as in from birds, is thought to have been very subtly changed by the many different dialects until it eventually became "duvet". Australians usually call the duvet a "doona", which is actually an IKEA product back in the 60's. Before then, Australians generally called it a continental quilt. As with Americans, Australians tend to clump all luxury bed linens, be they quilts, duvets, or comforters in to a single term, although they are very different.
A duvet provides exceptional insulation from the cold, because it is filled with down, other soft feathers, wool, or synthetic fiber.
A duvet is essentially a fluffy and bulky bag that is intended to replace all other underlying blankets with one top layer. Thus, it's possible to dispense with additional layers of bedding such as sheets, quilts, bed covers, and blankets. Duvets are always sold with removable and elaborate covers that come with matching pillow covers as well. A duvet cover helps keep the inner layer clean for longer.
Generally speaking no-one should have a problem making up a bed with a duvet and putting on a clean cover. I must be the exception to this rule. I am short and not strong enough to do it on my own so I need help. My partner is six two and strong and he does the whole thing in seconds, so guess who I ask to help me? He soon becomes impatient with my fumblings and does it himself. Thats one for the ladies!!Duvet Vs. Comforter, Do You Really Know The Differences
