Before purchasing a duvet, remember to check its tog rating. The "tog" is a measure of thermal resistance -- that is, how hard it is for heat to escape through the duvet. A 3.0 - 4.5 tog rating is usually sufficient for summer. For spring and autumn, a rating of 7.0 to 10.5 will keep you warm. In winter, you will probably prefer a duvet with a tog rating of 12.0 to 13.5. If you are buying a duvet for a child, go for a lighter tog rating -- children are more likely than adults to find a high-tog duvet uncomfortably warm. If you want to be prepared for anything, look into duo duvet sets. These include both a low-tog and a medium-tog duvet, which can be joined together to create a high-tog winter duvet. Some manufacturers also offer duvets that have different tog ratings in each half, for the benefit of partners who feel the cold unequally.
Even with a good duvet cover it would be wise to regularly wash your duvet, however it should not be necessary to go to such extreme measures to remove dust mites from the duvet if you have an effective duvet cover. One advantage to the duvet cover is if they are allergen proof you should be able to just change out the duvet cover for washing on a frequent basis and then on a less frequent schedule clean your duvet. Another advantage to this routine is that you will be able to change out the look and feel of your bedroom on a regular basis as well if you have duvet covers with various designs.Defining Luxury Bedding Terms Duvets
You've probably already used a duvet, but you still don't know what it is. It is a product that provides insulation just like a blanket would. The difference is that it is a bag, that is filled with eiderdown (generally known as down) feathers and completely eliminates the need to use any sheets, blankets, quilts, or comforters to cover oneself while sleeping. It is one of the softest coverings, and therefore, most comfortable to sleep in. It is also known as a duvet insert or duvet comforter.
